Why Calibrate PULSE?

01 Sep 2006

British scientist Lord Kelvin (William Thomson 1824 – 1907) said in his lecture to the Institution of Engineers, 3 May 1883, “I often say that when you can measure what you are speaking about and express it in numbers you know something about it; but when you cannot express it in some numbers your knowledge is a meagre and unsatisfactory kind; it may be the beginning of knowledge but you have scarcely, in your thoughts, advanced to the stage of science, whatever the matter maybe”.

This famous remark emphasises the importance of measurement in the world of science, industry and commerce. We all use and depend on it daily, in even the most mundane aspects of life – from setting your wristwatch to the radio time signal, to filling the car fuel-tank, or checking the weather forecast. All of these things depend on proper calibration and traceability to national and international standards.

As components age and equipment undergoes changes in temperature or sustains mechanical stress, critical performance gradually degrades. This is called “drift”. When this happens, your test results become unreliable and both design and production quality suffer. While drift cannot be eliminated, it can be detected and contained through the process of calibration.

Calibration is simply the comparison of instrument performance to a standard of known accuracy. It may simply involve the determination of deviation from nominal, or include correction (adjustment) to minimise the errors. Properly calibrated equipment provides you with confidence that your products/services meet their specifications.

PULSE Calibration

  • Is always traceable to the standard
  • Optimises production yields – measurement within specification
  • Provides accurate measurement and result
  • Optimises resources
  • Fulfils demands from local government according to ISO 17025
  • Assures consistency
  • Ensures that measurements and products are compatible with those made elsewhere

By making sure that your measurements are based on international standards, you promote customer acceptance of your products around the world. If you’re looking to justify the cost of calibration, and want to make sure that it does add value, imagine that the calibration of equipment is no longer a maintenance issue, decided by engineers. Finance and procurement personnel are becoming involved in decisions of ‘who to use’ and ‘how much does it cost?’ Choosing the right calibration partner is vital and should be based on capability, experience, accuracy and service and not only the price.

Quite simply, if you rely on the results of your test and measurement equipment, you must have complete confidence that they are reliable and accurate. And who better to ensure that your test and measurement instruments are accurate and in peak form than the world’s leader in the design and manufacture of test and measurement equipment.

An effective calibration service ensures the range and quality of equipment as well as the technical expertise to compare performance against standards that are significantly better than the specifications of the instrument being calibrated.

Brüel & Kjær Calibration Services

We offer a wide range of calibration services, covering both general application and compliant to standard. Calibration Services are categorised as a Accredited, Traceable, and Verification. The laboratories work in accordance with ISO 17025:2005 for accredited calibration approved by a national accredited body.

Advantages of Calibration

Makes the necessary adjustments to return an instrument back to its full specification when found to be out of tolerance

Provides full and clear documentation showing exactly how the instrument performs once calibrated and, where appropriate, shows how it was performing beforehand (a ISO 17025 quality system requirement)

Minimises ‘measurement uncertainty’ by ensuring the accuracy of the equipment used to test your instrument is at least a factor of four better than the equipment being calibrated

Boosts your confidence in your products and increases your profits by ensuring that your test instruments are calibrated correctly.
